_____________
Join us for this FREE event at Chetco Brewing, where Winter Waters co-founder Alanna Kieffer will lead a demonstration on how to make your own seaweed cyanotype bookmarks to take home! Bring an ocean related book or seafood related cookbook to swap.
A cyanotype is a photographic blueprint made through a chemical reaction between UV light and chemically coated paper. Cyanotypes have been a form of scientific documentation for seaweed, terrestrial plants, and natural specimens since they were invented in the 1700s and were actually some of the original form of photographic printing. Learn about the process and techniques to make cyanotypes using a collection of pressed seaweeds and PNW flora.
Alanna Kieffer is a marine biologist, educator, seaweed farmer, and owner of Shifting Tides. Check out last year’s seaweed cyanotype class HERE to get a feel for this event.
Please come hungry and thirsty and support the good people of Chetco Brewing Company, who are graciously hosting this free event.
Learn about Sea Otter Reintroduction with the Elakha Alliance
We’re so stoked to be joined by the Elakha Alliance, who will be on-site to discuss their mission to restore sea otters to the Oregon coast.
Once abundant across the North Pacific, sea otters were aggressively hunted during the maritime fur trade for their rich fur pelts, resulting in a loss of 99% of the global population. While the species has recovered along much of its range, there has not been a population of this important keystone species in Oregon for over 100 years. The Elakha Alliance is an Oregon nonprofit working to build the science, policy, and community engagement to reintroduce a population of sea otters to the Oregon Coast and 10% of sales from this event will go to their ongoing efforts to bring sea otters back to Oregon!
As a keystone species, sea otters play a vital role in maintaining the health of our nearshore ecosystems. By controlling sea urchin populations, otters allow kelp forests and seaweed beds, the very specimens we’ll be using for our art—to flourish. This is a great opportunity to learn how the reintroduction of these "climate warriors" could create a more resilient and biodiverse coastline for Oregon.
